Positive Parkwood: He’s one of our own!

They say never meet your heroes but that certainly wasn’t the case for Max when he met the paramedic team who saved his Dad’s life.

We have had an amazingly heart-warming story shared with us this week about one of our year 6 Parkwood Primary School Students, Max and we just had to feature it in this week’s Positive Parkwood blog!

Max’s mum shares their story with us:

My husband Giles was critically ill during lockdown in November 2020 with an aortic dissection.

After a long recovery he’s doing well and Max has become a young ambassador for Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex a few years ago but more recently over the holidays we were finally able to meet up with some of the paramedics, the call handler from the 999 call & the dispatcher too.

It was very cathartic for us all and great for Max to be able to say a massive thank you for their support and help at a really traumatic time.

Instead of letting this traumatic experience take over, it has united the family in their role in supporting the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance team.

Once Max met the KSS team in Rochester, they were blown away by his attitude and passion and knew he would make a perfect Team KSS Young Ambassador. They are over the moon that Max accepted this position to join them.

Just over four years ago Giles (Max’s Dad) suffered a tear of his major aorta artery. After calling 999 student Paramedic, Amy Harvey, Paramedic, Leah-Ann Bothe and Critical Care Paramedic Antony Bailes were next to arrive on scene, before being joined by The Air Ambulance Charity Kent, Surrey, Sussex.

Together they stabalised Giles before transporting him by road to Kings College Hospital where he spent four days in the intensive care unit, as well as a further four days in the high dependency ward. In that time, Giles underwent a total of nine hours of emergency heart surgery to repair the torn artery.

Now four years on Max’s family have been able to meet the team who helped to save his life and say thank you.

The family were given a tour of the Emergency Operations Centre where they learnt more about the process from the initial 999 call to resources being dispatched.

We’re so proud of Max for the work he is doing to raise awareness for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance team.

Thank you to Christine for sharing her story.
